  National New Home Sales Rise in April, Top Estimates
      29-5-2006

     New home sales nationwide increased in April, despite predictions that rising mortgage rates would result in a dramatic drop. The Commerce Department reported Wednesday that sales of new single-family homes increased by 4.9 percent last month to a seasonally adjusted annual rate of 1.198 million units, the highest rate since December.
